The reality of the hedge fund business is that most hedge funds fail massively. Their average lifespan is five years. Up to 10 percent of hedge funds go out of business each year. Out of an estimated 7200 hedge funds in existence at the end of 2010, 775 failed or closed in 2011, as did 873 in 2012, and 904 in 2013. Within three years around a third of all funds disappeared.

Investors naively expect more of hedge funds, especially because of their exorbitant fees and expenses. But investors are in for shocking disappointments. If a fund loses money for more than a few months, investors leave in search of better returns. The exclusivity status and mystique of hedge funds, the investment vehicle of choice for some of the super rich, quickly lose their sheen, turning rotten and putrid.
